Hostile Attributions in Incarcerated Adult Male Offenders: An Exploration of Diverse Pathways
نویسندگان
چکیده
Hostile attributions were examined in 150 incarcerated males to test the possibility that there are two pathways associated with hostile attributions: one related to psychopathy as assessed using the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised [PCL-R; Hare, 1991] and one related to depressogenic attributional style, as assessed using the Inferential Styles Questionnaire [ISQ; Rose et al., 1994]. Ten hypothetical vignettes were used to assess attributions of intent. Both PCL-R and ISQ scores were significant predictors of hostile attributions. Further, the two processes appeared to relate differentially to the race of the participants, such that an ISQ-hostile attribution association was stronger among African American participants than among Caucasian participants. Contrary to prediction, hostile attributions did not mediate associations between personality and violent crime. Aggr. Behav. 31:99–115, 2005. r 2005 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

A Mixed Methods Investigation of Male Juvenile Delinquents’ Attributions Toward Violence
In an attempt to understand why youth commit violent acts, Daley and Onwuegbuzie (2004) conducted a study wherein they found that juvenile offenders tend to commit violence attribution errors— defined as negative emotional responses to negative social interactions which then serve as antecedents to at-risk behaviors. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to replicate Daley and Onwuegbuzie...
متن کاملAttributions toward violence of male juvenile delinquents: a concurrent mixed-methodological analysis.
The authors investigated male juvenile delinquents' causal attributions about others' behavior and the salient pieces of information that the male juveniles used in arriving at their attributions. Participants were 82 male juvenile offenders whom the authors drew randomly from the population of juveniles who were incarcerated at a correctional facility. A concurrent mixed-methodological analysi...
متن کاملA longitudinal investigation of maternal influences on the development of child hostile attributions and aggression.
Aggression in children is associated with an enhanced tendency to attribute hostile intentions to others. However, limited information is available regarding the factors that contribute to the development of such hostile attribution tendencies. We examined factors that contribute to individual differences in child hostile attributions and aggression, focusing on potential pathways from maternal...
متن کاملAn examination of suicide attempts among incarcerated sex offenders.
Little is known about suicide attempts among sex offenders. This study examines the rates of nonfatal suicide attempts among a sample (N = 3,030) of incarcerated male sex offenders. Overall, the authors found that 14% of sex offenders in the study sample had made a suicide attempt at some point in their lives. Of those, 11% had reported a suicide attempt prior to incarceration, 0.5% had made a ...

Despite the enormous costs associated with homicidal behavior, there have been no serious neuroscientific studies examining youth who commit homicide. METHODS Here we ...
